Be aware of a growing number of fake website listings that scammers are developing that mimic the company's website and include fake contact phone numbers and links. An individual may use an internet search engine when seeking information on how to contact an Ameren representative, pay their bill or change service. A search may provide several "legitimate looking" but fake Ameren website listings. Once the customer calls the fake phone number or clicks on a fake link, they are tricked into thinking they are engaging with an Ameren representative or visiting the company's official website.
Threatening to disconnect utility service if payment is not received immediately. Frequently state a service person is on the way to shut off the power.
Requesting immediate payment that often includes false payment not received claims.
Impersonating company representatives by asking for immediate payment for equipment installation or false repair fee requests.
Request for immediate payment often includes suggested ways to pay such as Bitcoin, Prepaid money cards or Cash Apps.
Online search engine postings that mimic official company contact information that directly links to scammers.
Offering to eliminate total payment due by making an immediate partial or special discounted payment.
Ameren has joined nearly 100 utilities nationwide to raise awareness of scam tactics and educate customers before they become victims. In coordination with this effort, the third Wednesday in November has been designated as Utilities United Against Scams Day.
